Within the framework of the SKILL2SUSTAIN project, the Faculty of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy (AGGF) of the University of Banja Luka (UBL) has successfully modernized six courses across three study programmes at Bachelor’s and Master’s levels. The modernization strengthens the integration of digital and green skills into higher education, aligning course content with contemporary professional needs and the priorities of the green and digital transition.
The modernization covers six courses in architecture, civil engineering and geodesy: Principles of Structuring Architectural Buildings, Energy-Efficient and Environmentally Friendly Building Materials, Building Materials 2, Contemporary Concrete Composites, Cartography 1, and Cartography 3. The updated curricula and course syllabi were developed in line with the recommendations of the SKILL2SUSTAIN project, emphasizing the systematic integration of green and digital competencies, interdisciplinary learning, and the application of advanced digital tools in education.
In architecture and civil engineering, the modernized courses address the principles of the circular economy, energy efficiency, decarbonization, and the sustainable management of building materials. The course Energy-Efficient and Environmentally Friendly Building Materials connects conventional approaches to construction materials with circular economy principles and strategies for reducing carbon emissions, taking into account relevant standards and European sustainability frameworks. Contemporary Concrete Composites incorporates topics related to sustainable construction materials, construction waste recycling, and the development of high-performance materials with a reduced environmental footprint. These topics prepare students to apply contemporary solutions in sustainable construction and the renovation of existing buildings.
Digital transformation is another key component of the modernized courses Building Materials 2 and Principles of Structuring Architectural Buildings. Their updated content emphasizes Building Information Modelling (BIM), digital catalogues of construction materials, and other digital tools that strengthen students’ digital literacy and connect theoretical knowledge with professional practice.
The modernization of Cartography 1 and Cartography 3 focuses on strengthening students’ digital and geoinformatics competencies. The updated content covers Geographic Information Systems (GIS), digital cartography, 3D terrain and object visualization, and spatial data interoperability. Open-source software and project-based learning enable students to apply their knowledge to practical challenges, including noise pollution analysis, renewable energy potential assessment, and the identification of areas important for carbon sequestration. Cartography 3 further emphasizes the integration of BIM and GIS technologies and the use of relevant standards and initiatives, including ISO standards, the INSPIRE Directive, CityGML, and IFC. These topics provide a foundation for developing digital twins of the built and urban environment.
By modernizing these six courses, UBL contributes to the objectives of SKILL2SUSTAIN by enhancing the quality and relevance of higher education and equipping future professionals with the digital and green skills needed for a more sustainable and resilient Western Balkans.
